Rule Out the Cheap Causes First

Plenty of transmission complaints are not internal failures. Low or burnt fluid, a sticking solenoid, a bad sensor or a software issue can all cause harsh or late shifts, and each costs far less than a rebuild. A software update or a fluid correction can be all it takes.

We check those first: fluid level and condition, stored codes, solenoid tests and a recorded road test. A rebuild or replacement transmission is quoted only once the tests show internal wear, and then both prices are given to you together.

Four-wheel-drive problems get the same treatment. A transfer case actuator or encoder fault is not a transmission failure, and it is priced as what it is.

Towing a trailer up the passes is the hardest work a transmission does. If you tow, tell us; it changes which fluid service interval makes sense and which parts we look at first.

What Shapes a Transmission Price

Where the fault is
Controls and sensors cost far less to fix than worn clutches or hard parts.
Rebuild or replace
A rebuild suits a sound case; a remanufactured or used unit can be quicker or cheaper.
Drivetrain type
All-wheel and four-wheel-drive vehicles have transfer cases that add complexity.
Fluid and parts
Some transmissions need specific fluids or parts that cost more.

Included in Transmission Work

  • Fluid level and condition check
  • Transmission module code scan
  • Solenoid and sensor testing
  • Recorded road test of shift timing
  • Transfer case and 4x4 control checks
  • Leak repair at seals and cooler lines
  • Rebuild with new clutches and seals when needed
  • Replacement unit installation as an alternative

Shifting Problems: Fix Now or Watch?

Book soon if

  • The engine revs but the vehicle does not accelerate
  • Gears slip or drop out
  • The transmission warning light is on
  • There is a burning smell after driving

Can usually wait if

  • A slightly firm shift when the engine is cold
  • A small, slow drip with the fluid level correct
  • A one-time hesitation that has not returned
  • The fluid is due for a scheduled change

Slipping generates heat, and heat is what destroys transmissions. Catching a problem early is often the difference between a fluid service and a rebuild. If the fluid looks dark or smells burnt, mention it when you call.

How a Transmission Visit Goes

  1. Check

Fluid, codes and a road test rule out the inexpensive causes. The road test records exactly when each shift happens.

  2. Confirm

If the fault is internal, we explain what failed and why.

  3. Quote

You get repair, rebuild or replacement prices and choose. Nothing comes out of the vehicle until you decide.
